April's Tip of the Month

New research provides more impetus for older Americans with hearing loss to address their impairments with the use of hearing instruments. According to the study, older adults with mild to moderate hearing loss may expend so much cognitive effort trying to hear what other people are saying that they are not able to understand what they just heard. In effect, the extra effort that these older adults expend on trying to hear words undermines the cognitive resources they delegate to comprehension. As a result, they may be diagnosed with cognitive dysfunction when, in reality, all they need is a hearing instrument. It is important to remember that hearing loss is a physical health problem, and if you know an older adult who displays this sort of cognitive lapse, suggest a hearing test.
